CALL FOR PAPERS

Short Description of the Field:

Education and collaboration are now emerging as very important application fields of grid technologies. On the one hand, the grid may also enable access to large amounts of heterogeneous resources that can be employed for educational purposes. Examples include remote laboratories, 3D virtual environments and educational services. Thus, the use of grid computing could provide significant benefits for education at different levels: K-12, high school, university, skill training and learning for life. On the other hand, there is an increasing interest in developing new tools and applications in order to support collaboration between users within a grid context. Distributed high quality visualization, distributed grid workflow management, and enhance group and presence management and visualization contribute to realize Grid-based collaboratories. Such collaboratories are being developed for the scientific community, but in the near future they will be adapted for collaborative work or collaborative learning purposes, as it has happened to other technologies developed by the scientific community. Complementary to these is the desire to create a forum for the discussion of innovative and exemplary materials and approaches to education about the grid and emerging grid technologies and standards.

Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) is one of the major research fields in technology-enabled education that has grown out of wider research into e-learning and collaborative computing. Paticularly, CSCL focuses on the use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) as a mediational tool within collaborative methods of learning (e.g. peer learning and tutoring, reciprocal teaching, project or problem-based learning, simulations, games). CSCL applications can thus also benefit from grid computing by leveraging current research efforts focusing on the use of the grid for education and collaboration.

Scope:

This workshop focuses on the use of the grid for education and/or collaboration in general and for collaborative learning in particular, and on grid education. For this reason, CLAG 2005 aims at bringing together educators and researchers in grid computing, e-learning, collaborative computing, and CSCL to present their latest work integrating these fields. To foster collaboration among researchers from different backgrounds we would like to organize two panels. The first panel will discuss 1) how to incorporate collaboration into grid-based e-learning systems, and 2) how to develop current scientific grid-based collaboratories into more generic collaborative learning environments. The second panel will discuss the development of curriculum for grid education at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

We are soliciting high quality papers reporting original work on a broad range of topics, including, but not limited to:

PAPER SUBMISSION

Paper Submissions:

CLAG+Grid.edu 2005 invites authors to submit original and unpublished work. CLAG+Grid.edu 2005 also encourages the submission of outstanding "work-in-progress" papers. Authors are invited to submit papers of not more than 8 pages of double column text using single spaced 10 point size type on 8.5 x 11 inch pages, as per IEEE 8.5 x 11 manuscript guidelines, see http://www.computer.org/cspress/instruct.htm. Authors should submit a PostScript (level 2) or PDF file that will print on a PostScript printer. Electronic submission by email is strongly encouraged. Hard copies should be sent only if electronic submission is not possible. Submission implies the willingness of at least one of the authors to register and present the paper. Please email your papers to oardaiz@ac.upc.es or migbot@yllera.tel.uva.es which is the preferred method for submission. Put "CLAG+Grid.edu 2005 submission" in the subject of the email.

Proceedings:

All papers selected for this workshop are peer-reviewed and will be published as a part of the CCGrid 2005 Proceedings. It is expected that the proceedings will be published by the IEEE Computer Society Press, USA.

Special Issue:

Authors of a selection of the best papers related to collaborative learning applications of grid technology will be invited to present extended versions to be considered for publication in a special issue of the Future Generation Computer Systems, the International Journal of Grid Computing: Theory, Methods and Applications.
