Group Background

Group:           High Performance Computing Group
Department:        Computer Architecture Department
University:          Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya

The Computer Architecture Department has been actively involved in state of the art research in computer architecture since 1981. The department has a total of 38 faculty members. Of these, 5 full professors and 12 associate professors, together with their 35 students, form the High Performance Computing Group. Together, the group has published more than 200 papers, with over 40 published in top conferences such as ISCA, Micro, HPCA and ICS. Publications cover the following areas:

• Processor architecture, including topics such as Cache Design, Branch Prediction, ILP processors, Multithreading, Speculation, Vector Processors, Memory Systems, Value Prediction, etc.
• Compilation for ILP processors, including the design of an optimizing compiler (Ictineo), and research on topics such as Software Pipelining, advanced register file organizations, compilation for wide busses, loop blocking transformations and software prefetching schemes.
• Parallelization and Data Distribution, including the design of a tool to perform automatic data distribution for parallel machines and research on automatic parallelization of loops and load balancing for multiprocessors.
• Operating Systems, including topics such as Input/Ouput and processor scheduling  for multiprocessor systems, extensible operating systems (exokernels), the design of a full distributed-memory multiprocessor kernel, and hardware-friendly operating systems
The group also has strong Industrial links with European Corporations, such as Parsytec, Suprenum GmbH, Thorn Emi, Honeywell Bull, Siemens, Bertin, Indo, Intes GmbH, Ferrari Auto SpA, Genias Software GmbH, Intecs Sistemi SpA, Geospace Gmbh, Volkswagen AG, Indra Espacio, Infocarto, EDF-LNH, QuantiSci S.L., Iberdrola, AZTI, TGI. There has also been some direct collaboration with U.S. companies, such as Convex Computer Corporation.

The group also manages a Supercomputing Center, the CEPBA, that provides supercomputing facilities to researchers all over Europe and coordinates and manages industrial projects related to supercomputing applications.

Industrial Affiliates Program

The Industrial Affiliates Program was started in 1998 to increase the links between the HPC group and industry. The main gols of this program are:
• To allow a direct dissemination of our research results to key industry members,
• To establish stable channels with industry partners that enable strong two-way communication of ideas and people. In particular, the program should increase the number of:
• internships of our graduate students in industry,
• graduate students that are hired by foreign industry (U.S. and Japan) at graduation time,
• sabbatical stays of our professors in industry.
• To help fund our on-going research projects through donations made by corportations

Benefits for you and your Company

There are several benefits to being an affiliate.

• First, we will hold an annual meeting to discuss our recent research and allow you to influence our directions (attendance to the meeting is  limited to 3 persons per company).

The first meeting was held in Barcelona on June, 26th, 1998.
 
• Second, we provide access to early version of our papers as soon as they become available (typically three months before publication), through a password-protected web page.

 
• Third, you will get to know our graduate students. We believe that the quality of our students is comparable to any of the top U.S. universities. This believe is supported by the quality of their recent publications. Members of the affiliate program will get a book with all student's resumes (which is also available at the password-protected web page) .

Affiliate membership is open to all organizations.  If you want to obtain membership, please make a $5,000 check payable to:
